Key Requirements & Components

 
  • Mandatory for Commercial Vessels: Required on ships with 10+ crew or beyond 60 nautical miles from a safe haven (UK/MCA rules).
  • Age & Experience: Must be 18+, with at least 1 month of sea time in any capacity.
  • STCW Basic Safety: Includes Personal Survival, Firefighting, First Aid, and Safety/Social Responsibility.
  • Food Safety: Usually requires a Level 3 Food Safety certificate (or equivalent).
  • Medical Certificate: A valid Seafarer Medical (ENG 1 or similar) is needed.
  • Assessment: Covers theory (health, budgeting, diet) and practical skills (cooking various dishes, knife skills, galley ops)
